Job Description We are seeking a Chemist 1st year to join our team. This role will be responsible for the performance of routine chemical analyses and testing. Assist in performing more complex activities with instruction and monitoring by more senior personnel such as troubleshooting, problem solving, and data collection. Follow established procedures requiring the application of fundamental scientific knowledge and skills in a safe, effective, and efficient manner. Monitor boiler water quality by use of standardized tests, operate and monitor plant sewage treatment plant (plant specific), operate and monitor plant water treatment facility, operate and monitor cooling tower chemistry (plant specific), monitor drinking water (plant specific), monitor scrubber chemistry (plant specific). Conduct sampling and perform tasks associated with federal and state laws associated with water and wastewater. Understand and follow site specific permits and obtain state licensing as required. Participate in continuous improvement activities. RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL RESIDE WITHIN 1 HOUR DRIVE TIME TO KNOX LEE POWERPLANT Chemist 1st Year What You'll Do: * Assist in the coordination of all activities pertaining to the Laboratory, and for the maintenance and proper use of equipment. Initiate requisitions for supplies, equipment, and work necessary for the proper operation of the responsible areas. * Follow Unit specific guidelines with direction from procedures and/or senior chemist or supervision. * Outline and prepare routine test procedures as directed by supervision. * Assist in the installation, operation, calibration, and maintenance of test equipment. * Assist in performing special analyses and investigations and prepare written reports as required to support changing lab operating conditions. * Assist in the collection, documentation, and evaluation of data necessary to comply with federal, state and local environmental regulations. * Utilize AEP environmental, health and safety programs to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. * Collect, prepare, analyze and ship samples * Perform internal inspections of the area specific equipment as needed. May include but not limited to boiler, D.C. heater, condenser, cooling tower, media filters, and demineralizer vessels. * Maintain calibration of on-line instrumentation for boiler water quality monitoring and maintain records of lab instrument calibration for environmental audits. * Operate and monitor plant sewage facility. * Operate and monitor water treatment facilities both manually and by PLC. * Obtain a basic knowledge of industrial processes and systems. What We're Looking For: Chemist 1st Year Education requirements: High school diploma or GED. Associate degree in science or related field or equivalent education and/or experience. Work Experience No experience required. Possess basic computer skills. Required License(s)/Certification(s): Possess valid state driver's license. Other Requirement: * Must be willing to work rotating shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays. * Minimum long distance travel required but the inspection of remote equipment is a daily requirement for this position. * Must respond to callouts in both outage and non-outage work to maintain and support business operational needs and schedules. * Must be able to learn and comply with all applicable plant operating instructions and procedures. * Must be able to learn and comply with the rules, safety practices and procedures applicable to the work environment and report unsafe conditions and practices. * Must learn and have a working knowledge of Safety and Environmental guidelines. * Must be able to learn and properly use the tools and equipment and their use as required in the work. * Must be able to read, interpret and work from simple prints and specifications. * To communicate effectively, both verbally and written, are required for this position. * Demonstrate professional conduct and effective interactions with employees, contractors and others. * Must be willing and able to work inside designated confined space entry areas, elevated areas and in hot and cold temperatures. * Must be able to wear respirator when required. * Train for fire fighting, first aid, AED and other emergency response programs as required. * Demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities for next line of progression is required. * The essential and/or marginal job functions and the associated abilities/requirements/conditions outlined above describe the general nature and level of the work performed. * They are not intended to and in no way represent an exhaustive listing of all tasks involved in performing the job. What You'll Get: $34.61 per Hour Compensation Data Compensation Grade: U074-S39 Compensation Range: $34.61-34.61 USD The Physical Demand Level for this job is: L - Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 to 12 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 5-6 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) When it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time, but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg c ontrols; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
