This is a senior finance leadership role with a fast-growing and well-capitalized startup in the Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance industry. Licensed in New Hampshire and actively expanding into Maine and Massachusetts, the company is writing both personal lines (home and auto) and preparing to launch commercial offerings next year.

Backed by a significant investor from Massachusetts and led by an experienced President (former state insurance commissioner), the organization is overcapitalized for its early-stage needs and focused on long-term strategic growth. With outsourced functions (IT, claims, and policy management) handling day-to-day operations, the leadership team is focused on high-impact decision-making and market expansion.

With the founding CFO transitioning to an advisory role over the coming year, this role is an opportunity for a senior financial executive to step into a leadership seat and help build out a finance organization from a solid foundation.

Location: Bedford, NH (Hybrid – 2–3 days/week in-office)

Position Summary

We are seeking a strategic and hands-on Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with a strong foundation in insurance accounting, particularly within P&C insurance. The CFO will lead financial operations, oversee outsourced providers, and partner with executive leadership to drive performance, regulatory compliance, and long-term business value. This is an ideal role for a senior insurance finance professional who is not only technically strong but also eager to work cross-functionally with underwriting, marketing, and technology to help scale the business.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead all finance functions, including GAAP/statutory accounting, financial reporting, forecasting, controls, and treasury
• Manage relationships with key external partners including reinsurers (e.g., Gen Re), actuaries (e.g., Mellman), claims TPAs (e.g., Sedgwick), audit firms, and banking custodians
• Oversee outsourced financial and policy administration operations, ensuring accuracy and alignment with company goals
• Ensure compliance with insurance regulatory and financial reporting requirements
• Partner with the President and business unit leaders on incentive plans, product strategy, and operational execution
• Prepare financial statements and reporting packages for the board and investor stakeholders
• Assist in building out the finance team, beginning with oversight of a Controller
• Contribute to strategic initiatives related to geographic expansion, product development, and capital deployment

Qualifications

• CPA or equivalent accounting certification required
• 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and finance, with substantial exposure to P&C insurance
• Strong understanding of premium accounting, reinsurance, reserves, and statutory financial reporting
• Experience in early-stage or growth environments strongly preferred
• Comfortable leading in a lean, hands-on environment with outsourced operational support
• Experience in or familiarity with public accounting (e.g., insurance audit or advisory) is a plus
• High level of business engagement and collaborative mindset – able to contribute beyond traditional finance responsibilities
