Construction Materials Testers should have experience in the field, as well as in the laboratory, with a variety of material testing techniques and tools. Testers are tasked with creating material sampling reports, using measurement tools, and collecting materials on-site for testing in the laboratory, such as for soil compaction or concrete stress tests.
Construction Materials Testers typically report to a Quality Manager or Lab Manager. Most testers work during regular business hours; however, it is not uncommon that long/unusual hours be required for certain construction projects. Safety gear such as hardhats and steel-toed boots are necessary on construction sites.
This position requires certifications or prior experience in construction testing. Concrete and soil studies are also common, as is the use of tools to take samples of materials delivered by third-party vendors. Prior experience in documenting material non-conformance may be necessary, and candidates should have knowledge of a range of mechanical, physical, chemical, and non-destructive testing/examination (NDT/NDE) methods.
Employer requires certifications from such institutions as the American Concrete Institute, International Code Council, National Institute for the Certification of Engineering Technologies, TxDOT, CWI, Construction Materials Certification and Education (CMEC), the Precast/Pre-stressed Concrete Institute (PCI), the American Society for Quality (ASQ), or the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Nondestructive Examination (ANDE). A bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction science, or a related field is generally required, though candidates with suitable training, experience, and certifications may find work regardless of a degree
