Required to work shift work (24-hour scheduling/essential personnel) and may be assigned to any of the college locations; work weekends, nights to include overnight and holidays.

Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a Germanna regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic, political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, and many other activities.

Germanna Community College is currently seeking (2) Part Time Campus Security Officers. The Officers will be responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for customers and employees by patrolling and monitoring premises and personnel.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides foot patrol and vehicle patrol of all college grounds and buildings.
  • Responds to emergency situations and notifies public safety authorities/leadership.
  • Documents information/patrol activity, conducts preliminary investigations of incident, complete factual written reports and provide factual testimony in court if needed.
  • Works closely with the internal and external departments regarding any student or employee issues and provides student and employee public safety escorts and assist various motorists on college property.
  • Monitors CCTV and alarm systems and respond to alerts.
  • Serves as crowd/traffic control at special events or during emergencies.
  • Maintains security controls for college keys; safeguards and controls issued college equipment.
  • Checks for irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations.
  • Remains alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or public safety violators, approaches suspicious persons and/or notifies law enforcement as appropriate.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

  • Considerable working knowledge of statute enforcement; safety and security concepts, principles, procedures and techniques
  • Working knowledge of customer service practices and principles
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of security vehicles, communication equipment, alarm systems, and other types of security equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to follow and give oral and written instructions, meet physical demands of the position, to react appropriately in routine and emergency situations
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a diverse population, to gather information and write factual reports, and to explain and ensure compliance with policies, rules, and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement security policies and procedures
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification as a campus security officer as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS)
  • Previous experience or training in public safety operations
  • First Aid, CPR and AED training certification
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License with clean driving history, graduation from High School or equivalent
  • Knowledge of police/security "best practices" and OSHA standards
  • Experience with or willingness to learn AI tools.

Additional Considerations

  • DCJS Certification as a Campus Security Officer, or knowledge/experience in the security field
  • Law Enforcement/Security experience in a public service community or policing oriented organization
  • Have basic skills in the operation of personal computers, records management systems, and understanding of NIMS/ICS
