Communications Center Call Taker
Botetourt County Sheriff's Office is currently accepting applications to fill Communications Center Call Takers.
The Communications Center Call Taker will have a general knowledge of computers, knowledge of county geo-political boundaries, major highways, and landmarks; excellent listening skills; excellent communications skills, both written and oral, typing skill of at least 25 wpm with 95% accuracy; ability to proficiently operate all communications center and related office equipment associated with communications operator job responsibilities, ability to answer the telephone, record information as needed, and transfer call when necessary; ability to perform tactfully, courteously and proficiently under the pressures associated with the position, and the ability to perform shift work and shift rotation.

Minimum Qualifications
Must be 18 years of age or older.
High School graduate
No criminal record.
Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record.
Good credit history.
Citizen of the United States or have valid proof that citizenship is being sought.
Call Taker Primary Duties
Answers non-emergency lines for the Sheriff's Office and 911 calls for the county as needed
Asks caller to describe the nature of the emergency and asks follow-up questions, as necessary
Records all information in CAD and takes down location and personal information of the caller
Keeps callers on the line when necessary
Advises callers on the proper course of action as needed
Transfers calls to proper department, as necessary, and handles not emergency situations
Maintains logs of all calls
Reports any fraudulent or prank emergency calls to supervisor
Maintains documentation pertaining to calls received, towed vehicles and security checks
Operates telecommunications devices for the deaf and recording system for telephones and radio
Performs other duties as assigned by the communications supervisor
Obtains all certifications required for the position

Special Requirements
Environment can be stressful and fast-paced. The majority of time will be spent sitting at a computer. Shifts will be 11am to 11pm with rotating days off.
