Job Description: Building Automation IT Specialist
Position Overview
The Building Automation IT Specialist is responsible for the integration, programming, and management of IT systems that support building automation systems (BAS). This role combines knowledge of networking, software, and controls to ensure efficient operation, monitoring, and management of building systems, including HVAC, lighting, security, and energy management.
The specialist collaborates with engineers, facility managers, and IT professionals to design and implement solutions that improve building performance, optimize energy use, and enhance occupant comfort.
Key Responsibilities
System Integration and Configuration
Design, configure, and program building automation systems (BAS) to meet operational requirements.
Integrate BAS with existing IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, and cloud platforms.
Ensure compatibility between BAS protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks) and IT systems.
Network Management
Configure and maintain secure BAS networks, including VLANs, IP addressing, and firewall rules.
Troubleshoot network connectivity issues affecting BAS devices and ensure system uptime.
Collaborate with IT teams to implement cybersecurity measures for BAS systems.
System Monitoring and Maintenance
Monitor BAS performance, diagnose issues, and implement corrective actions.
Perform regular system updates, backups, and patches to ensure stability and security.
Develop and maintain dashboards for real-time monitoring and reporting of system performance.
Technical Support and Training
Provide technical support to facilities teams and end-users for BAS-related issues.
Train staff on using BAS interfaces, software tools, and best practices.
Project Management
Assist in the design and implementation of new BAS projects and upgrades.
Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal teams during system installations or retrofits.
Ensure project timelines and budgets are met while maintaining system quality.
Documentation and Compliance
Maintain detailed documentation for system configurations, network diagrams, and processes.
Ensure compliance with industry standards, local building codes, and organizational policies.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Equivalent work experience will be considered.
Experience
3-5 years of experience in building automation systems, IT network management, or related fields.
Hands-on experience with BAS platforms (e.g., Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Schneider Electric).
Technical Skills
Proficiency in BAS protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks).
Strong understanding of IT networking principles, including VLANs, IP addressing, and cybersecurity.
Experience with Windows/Linux servers and database management (e.g., SQL).
Knowledge of energy management systems and IoT platforms is a plus.

Working Conditions
Office and field-based work with occasional on-site visits for troubleshooting and installations.
