Summary

The Building Automation Controls Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of building automation systems (BAS) used for HVAC, lighting, security, and other systems. This role ensures optimal system performance, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort in commercial, industrial, or institutional facilities.


Responsibilities

  • Install, commission, and maintain Building Automation Systems (e.g., HVAC controls, lighting automation).
  • Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and calibration of sensors, actuators, controllers, and related hardware.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve system errors or faults using software diagnostics and field tools.
  • Program and configure control systems (e.g., BACnet, LonWorks, Modbus, Tridium/Niagara, Siemens, Honeywell, Johnson Controls).
  • Interpret electrical and mechanical drawings, blueprints, and system diagrams.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, electricians, and HVAC technicians to integrate systems and ensure performance.
  • Document service and installation work including changes to system programming and configuration.
  • Monitor energy management systems to ensure efficient operation and make performance recommendations.
  • Stay up to date with the latest control technologies and building codes.

Qualifications

  • Certifications (required): Niagara AX/N4, Tridium, (preferred) Distech, Trane, Lynxspring, Siemens, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, or equivalent vendor training.
  • Strong understanding of DDC (Direct Digital Controls), control loops, PID logic, and energy management principles.
  • Proficient in reading schematics and control diagrams.
  • Familiarity with networking fundamentals and system integration.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
