Summary

NOTE: The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued new requirements for health care and congregant care facilities to decrease the risk of COVID-19 outbreaks. Based on the CDPH public health mandate, all candidates for positions at Edgewood Center must provide proof of vaccination. Edgewood Center will consider applicants with ADA and Title VII exemptions on a case-by-case basis. Behavior Support Specialist- this is a full-time/non-exempt position, 40 hours, Mon.to Fri., 8am to 4:30 pm, located at our San Francisco campus. This position is 100% on site with occasional outings/field trips into the community with the students. This position is included in the Teamster Local 856 bargaining unit. Position Summary This position continuously maintains the assigned classroom's therapeutic milieu with strategies and supportive techniques to meet the mental health needs of the students to ensure continuous intensive services. Staff will support students in reaching behavioral and academic goals through the effective implementation of therapeutic interventions and managing behaviors though planned individual rehabilitation. Essential Functions * Coordinates with classroom staff to maintain and consistently support classroom needs * Monitors and coach's implementation of individualized support plans by maintaining awareness of all plans and providing ongoing feedback to classroom staff to ensure effective and consistent implementation of plans * Regularly reviews written Behavior Intervention Plans * Coordinates crisis intervention for classroom by implementing/guiding de-escalation techniques to ensure the safest and quickest de-escalation of crisis behavior * Assists other classroom staff with implementation of daily activities to ensure teamwork and consistency among staff * Provides safe, effective, efficient, culturally competent, and student-centered activities * Ensures consistent and timely completion of high quality daily mental health progress notes and attendance tracking * Completes assigned paperwork in a thorough and timely fashion * Maintains physical plant; keeps assigned areas clean and orderly and communicates maintenance issues to supervisors and other departments as necessary * Follows "Handle with Care" Principles and Techniques concentrating mainly on proactive de-escalation strategies, increasing level of interaction only as necessary. * Participates in treatment team meetings and supports following through with the implementation of treatment plans and other treatment team decisions * Maintains a professional approach to work, including maintaining appropriate adult/child boundaries, resolving differences with other staff in a collaborative manner and keeping a team-oriented approach to all aspects of the work * Follows all agency and program policies and procedures regarding attendance, documentation, emergency protocols, etc. * Provides guidance and direction to relief staff * Provides safe, effective, efficient, culturally competent and consumer centered implementation of direct care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of care * Responsible for generating, maintaining, printing, filling out, completing, and filing Daily Behavioral Reports (DBRs) * Completes all other assignments as delegated by designated supervisor Core Competencies * Partners with the treatment team members in the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of individualized treatment and care plans * Coordination and facilitation skills * Case management, mentoring, and coaching skills * Develops, maintains, and strengthen partnerships * Generates reports both verbally and in writing * Maintains physical environment (duties include, but are not limited to, cleaning and organizing the classroom/cottage, reporting safety issues to facilities, doing and sorting laundry, etc.) * Seeks support and guidance from senior counselors * Adheres to agency protocols (call out protocol, medication protocol, SIR protocol, training plan, etc.) * Meets program documentation standard (including increase in standard when taking OT shifts) * Contributes positively to creating a healing-centered, welcoming, anti-racist, LGBTQ+ affirming team and organization * Demonstrates cultural competency, humility, and sensitivity treating youth, families, and colleagues with dignity and respect Applied Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Effective written and verbal communication skills * Effective therapeutic interventions with volatile and potentially assaultive students, utilizing "Handle with Care" principles and techniques * Strong organizational skills * Strong mentoring skills * Familiarity with group and individual behavior management techniques * Ability to work independently * Ability to develop, cultivate an understanding of and adapt to the diverse backgrounds of students * Ability and willingness to utilize technology necessary to provide sound documentation of services provided * Ability to move or lift objects (50-100 lbs.) * Bachelor's degree preferred. (Strong experience may substitute for BA). * Must apply for, or possess, a National Provider Identification (NPI) Number within one week of date of hire. * Must be 21 years of age or older. * Work experience in a residential, school, day care or child centered agency with focus on children with special needs preferred. * Ability to carry out agency behavior intervention procedures * Ability to work collaboratively in a team approach * Demonstrates and models excellent "customer service" orientation, especially in the ability to interact with people at all levels, within and outside of the agency * Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills The hourly rate for this position is: $23.15-$30.09 dependent on language and experience differentials.
