Summary

Job Title: Before and After Care Instructor

Job Status: Part Time – Non-Exempt

Division: Recreation

Primary Work Location: Community Recreation Center

Reports To: Recreation Coordinator

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Essential Job Duties

  • Employee must maintain a positive working relationship with subordinates, co-workers, and the general public.
  • Work as scheduled.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly work environment and return supplies and equipment to the appropriate location when finished.
  • Dress in appropriate attire in accordance with District policies. District issue t-shirt and lanyard on the outermost layer of clothing at all times.
  • Provide each child with positive interactions and experiences.
  • Remain actively engaged with participants, including playing games, talking with participants, and leading activities.
  • Assist in planning and conducting daily activities for program participants.
  • Assist leader daily with activities, games, and crafts.
  • Assist in organizing and putting away all snacks and supplies.
  • Participate in site staff and Extended Care meetings as necessary. Be knowledgeable of all emergency procedures and codes.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings.
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings.
  • Comply with all Extended Care policies and procedures.
  • Performs the job safely and in compliance with Park District policies, procedures, work, and safety rules.
  • Organize and submit accident reports, incident reports, time sheets, and activity plans.
  • Maintain current certification in CPR.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Participate in required training and safety programs established and recognized by the Wheeling Park District.
  • Conducts all work safely, including using personal protective equipment and safety devices as required; identifies and reports any real or potential safety hazards.
  • Ensures participation and compliance with required and optional relevant employee training programs as defined by OSHA and PDRMA.
  • Oversees the investigation of critical safety incidents or accidents and develops appropriate responses for assigned areas of responsibility
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.

Position Requirements

One-two years prior work experience in related field; minimum of one to two years experience with school-age children, or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Skills And Abilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in child development practices.
  • Understand principles, practices, and objectives of community recreation.
  • Implement innovative activities on a daily basis
  • Supervise children in recreational setting.
  • Organizational skills related to programming.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills; ability to work with minimal supervision, to solve problems and produce work on a timely basis.
  • Demonstrate initiative, dependability, good judgment, tact, analytical skills, leadership, management activities, and the capability to work in a positive manner with the general public, Park District staff and Board of Commissioners.
  • Demonstrate consistent attendance and on-time arrival.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak in English.
  • CPR/AED certification or be able to earn within 60 days.

  • Required to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb stairs, twist, talk and hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tool, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to walk on uneven grounds.
  • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities are required and include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Employee may be exposed to natural and potentially extreme weather conditions.
  • Driving to other park facilities will require the worker to be outside.
  • Employee may be exposed to cleaning agents, toner chemicals, chemicals or other potentially dangerous materials utilized in the manufacturing of arts and crafts or routine maintenance supplies.
  • Employee may be exposed to noise distractions from employees or equipment operation in adjacent work areas
