Position Overview

The Automation Maintenance Technician is responsible for supporting the operation, reliability, and efficiency of automated equipment within a food production environment. This role focuses on troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining electrical and mechanical systems on processing and packaging lines, while ensuring compliance with safety and quality protocols.

Core Responsibilities

Diagnose and resolve technical issues with automated equipment, including bagging, stacking, coding, weighing, and conveying systems.

Maintain electrical systems up to 460V, including motors, wiring, circuit breakers, relays, and control panels.

Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance routines to minimize unplanned downtime.

Interpret electrical diagrams and schematics to perform diagnostics and repairs.

Perform mechanical disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of machinery as required.

Assist in minor programming and diagnostics of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and variable frequency drives (VFDs).

Support production readiness by ensuring equipment is operational prior to shift startup.

Respond quickly to mechanical or electrical malfunctions during operation.

Fabricate or modify mechanical components when necessary to restore functionality.

Promote and adhere to established safety practices such as lockout/tagout, ladder use, and proper tool handling.

Support regulatory compliance related to building codes and safety regulations.

Participate in ongoing training efforts for maintenance and operational team members.

Maintain accurate records of maintenance activity and completed tasks.

Assist with facility upkeep and repairs as assigned.

Ensure alignment with all food safety standards and report any concerns immediately.

Carry out additional tasks as assigned or volunteered for.

Qualifications & Skills

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to interpret technical manuals, safety procedures, and work instructions.

Self-directed with the ability to work independently or within a team.

At least five years of maintenance experience in a regulated production environment (preferably food-related).

Proficient with mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.

Experience using hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.

Familiarity with fabrication techniques and working from technical drawings.

Willing and able to work any shift, including weekends or overtime when required.

Required

Education & Preferred Credentials

High school diploma or equivalent.

Basic proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Preferred

Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Valid driver’s license in Illinois.

Physical Demands

Capable of lifting objects up to 50 pounds.

Able to stand, walk, bend, or squat for extended periods.

Comfortable performing repetitive tasks with hands and arms.

Ability to work in cold or refrigerated environments.

Must be able to push and pull heavy loads using manual equipment.

Capable of working at heights using elevated platforms or roof-access equipment.

Working Conditions

Work takes place in a facility with refrigeration, frozen storage areas, and active production lines.

Exposure to moving machinery, packaged food products, and moderate to high noise levels.

Food Safety & Quality Assurance

Promptly report any deviations related to equipment, product quality, or packaging issues.

Take immediate action or escalate any food safety risks or non-compliant conditions to appropriate leadership.

Support a culture of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance across all maintenance tasks.
