Position Overview


The Audit Manager will play a pivotal role in managing complex audit engagements, developing client relationships, and leading a team of audit professionals. This position requires a dynamic leader who can balance technical excellence, client service, and team development. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical skills, leadership abilities, and a strategic approach to audit and assurance services.

Key Responsibilities



Engagement Leadership

  • Manage multiple audit engagements across various industries and entity types
  • Develop comprehensive audit strategies and risk assessment approaches
  • Oversee planning, fieldwork, and completion of financial statement audits
  • Ensure compliance with professional standards (GAAS, GAAP) and regulatory requirements
  • Review and approve financial statements, audit workpapers, and client communications
  • Identify and resolve complex accounting and auditing issues
  • Prepare and review management letters and other client deliverables
  • Manage engagement budgets and ensure profitability

Client Relationship Management

  • Serve as primary client contact for assigned audit engagements
  • Develop and maintain strong, long-term client relationships
  • Communicate effectively with client management and governance teams
  • Provide strategic advice on accounting, financial reporting, and internal control matters
  • Identify and pursue additional service opportunities
  • Represent the firm at client meetings and industry events
  • Contribute to business development efforts

Team Leadership & Development

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop audit staff at senior and associate levels
  • Provide ongoing coaching, performance feedback, and professional guidance
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support career development
  • Train and supervise audit teams on technical skills and firm methodologies
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment
  • Promote quality control and professional standards
  • Support staff professional certification efforts

Technical Leadership

  • Stay current with evolving accounting and auditing standards
  • Conduct technical research on complex accounting issues
  • Develop firm best practices and audit methodologies
  • Participate in firm-wide quality control initiatives
  • Provide technical guidance to audit teams
  • Contribute to firm knowledge-sharing initiatives
  • Support implementation of new auditing technologies and approaches

Qualifications



Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
  • Active CPA license in Virginia
  • 7-10 years of progressive audit experience in public accounting
  • Extensive experience with financial statement audits
  • Strong technical knowledge of GAAS, GAAP, and industry-specific accounting requirements
  • Proven track record of team leadership and staff development
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Proficiency with audit software (CCH, Engagement, CaseWare)
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills
  • Ability to manage multiple engagements simultaneously

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Accounting or Taxation
  • Experience with specific industries (manufacturing, healthcare, nonprofit)
  • Knowledge of governmental or single audit requirements
  • Experience with complex accounting transactions
  • Previous experience in a mid-sized accounting firm
  • Additional certifications (CIA, CISA)
