Working at CQUniversity

The Coastal Marine Ecosystems Research Centre (CMERC) is seeking a distinguished Principal Research Fellow to lead progressive research in coastal restoration, ecological resilience, and habitat rehabilitation, with a focus on seagrass restoration. Situated within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, CMERC is home to the world’s largest seagrass nursery and with major programs in oyster, mangrove, inshore coral and macroalgal habitat restoration.

Based at CMERC’s world-class waterfront facility in Gladstone, you will lead and contribute to impactful applied research across marine ecology, wetland and benthic ecosystems, and climate adaptation, aligned with CMERC’s multidisciplinary programs. You will secure and manage external funding, publish influential research, and mentor emerging scientists. In this role, you’ll join a dynamic and friendly team of marine scientists and restoration experts, delivering innovative, evidence-based approaches to coastal and marine sustainability. Collaborating with industry, government, and academic partners, you will help drive practical outcomes that support biodiversity, fisheries health, endangered species and climate resilience.

This role presents a unique opportunity to develop innovative restoration strategies, advance ecosystem services, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of critical coastal and marine environments. If you are an accomplished researcher with a strong track record and a passion for coastal and marine conservation, this role offers the chance to make a lasting impact in one of the world’s most significant marine regions.

Consider a change in scenery and make the move to Regional Queensland

Relocate to Gladstone and experience a vibrant coastal lifestyle with a relaxed pace, friendly community, and strong local economy. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, Gladstone is perfect for outdoor living - enjoy boating, fishing, or exploring nearby national parks and pristine beaches. Best of all, our generous relocation assistance makes your move smooth, stress-free, and almost cost-free.

Be Rewarded

  • 17% superannuation (with the choice to join an award-winning superfund)
  • 6 weeks annual leave (incl. Christmas and New Year closure)
  • 10 days personal/sick leave, plus 5 days carer’s leave
  • 7.25 hours engaged service leave
  • Fantastic professional and career development opportunities
  • Up to 26 weeks (six months) paid parental leave
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Program and Fitness Passport

  • Proven research track record, including publications, conference presentations, and recognised professional achievements with a H-index figure over 10.
  • Experience conducting strategically aligned research, with a focus on securing external funding and industry partnerships.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.
