Associate Packaging Engineer to join the packaging technical team!
Reporting to the Packaging Manager, the Associate Packaging Engineer will be a key member of The Wonderful Company’s centralized packaging team within Global Sourcing. This team drives profitable growth through a consumer-focused approach to developing new packaging technologies and supporting both existing and new products. The Associate Packaging Engineer will help implement initiatives that deliver cost savings, process improvements, and sustainability benefits. Success in this role requires strong collaboration with Marketing, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, and Sales. While supporting all business units, this role will primarily focus on Wonderful Citrus, Wonderful Pistachios & Almonds, POM Wonderful, FIJI Water, and JUSTIN Wine brands.
This position is based at our Los Angeles office at 11444 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90064. We follow a hybrid schedule: in-office Monday through Wednesday, with the option to work remotely Thursday and Friday.
Job Description
- Work closely with business units (BUs), packaging vendors, and Global Sourcing category managers to help deliver packaging initiatives. This will include cost savings, quality improvements, innovation, and sustainability projects across material categories such as corrugated, paperboard, glass, rigid plastic, and plastic film.
- Develop strong working relationships throughout the company, both at the headquarters and operations facilities.
- Provide technical expertise to BUs to assess opportunities, risks and provide packaging information and analysis for costing and feasibility of new developments.
- Manage multiple projects and provide packaging guidance and technical information (mockups, die lines, pallet patterns, specs, etc.) to assist with new designs.
- Conduct necessary packaging testing to ensure all packaging performance criteria are met (plant trials, distribution tests, packaging lab testing).
- Maintain and update necessary packaging specifications within packaging specifications database.
- Organize and maintain packaging lab equipment, processes, calibration schedules and test methods.
- Work with Global Sourcing team to identify new suppliers and assess suppliers’ capabilities. Provide packaging recommendations and feedback to all stakeholders.
Qualifications
- 1-3 years of packaging development experience in a CPG environment, ideally in the agriculture and food/beverage industries, required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Science/Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field required.
- Strong familiarity with 2D/3D CAD tools, preferably ArtiosCAD and Adobe Illustrator.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including functions such as PivotTables and lookup formulas.
- Experience with package distribution testing (e.g., ISTA), pallet pattern design and optimization (TOPS preferred or CAPE), palletizing techniques, and stretch film application.
- Proficiency with lab-scale package testing, including analysis and interpretation of test data.
- Excellent project management skills, particularly in cross-functional team settings and leading packaging and product development initiatives.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present clearly to all organizational levels.
- Self-motivated and proactive, open to alternative approaches and ideas to reach effective solutions.
- Analytical and creative problem solver.
- Recognized as a Packaging Subject Matter Expert (SME) and a trusted source for recommendations and technical guidance.
Pay Range: $80,000-$90,000 and may include a discretionary bonus. Final compensation will be dependent upon skills & experience.
