Job Description

The Barnes Center at The Arch is Syracuse University’s integrated health and wellness center which incorporates health promotion, counseling, health, and recreation. The Associate Director is a core member of the Health Promotion Leadership team. As part of the Health Promotion team, the Associate Director has oversight over day-to-day Health Promotion operations and serves as the senior leader of the Health Promotion team in the absence of the Director. This position is responsible for the administration and operation of signature services such as the Crowley Family Mindspa and satellite locations, Walters Pet Therapy Room/Program, Meditation Room, and Peer Leader team. The Associate Director will lead the development, implementation, and assessment of the Health Promotion communication strategy working with campus partners to create awareness of programs, services, and health/wellness campaigns. This position supervises a Health Promotion Specialist and indirectly supervises the student employee team.

Education and Experience

  • A master’s degree in public health, health promotion, health education, health communication, higher education administration or a closely related field of study.
  • Requires Five (5) plus years of post-bachelor’s degree professional experience in the field of health/wellness education with progressively increasing responsibilities.
  • Professional supervisory experience is required.
  • Certification such as Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), or Certified in Public Health (CPH), strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a collaborative leader.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and assessing health communication efforts.
  • Experience providing training and on-going development to students, peer educators, and/or employees.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of best practices in college health promotion and public health.
  • Ability to oversee operational and physical spaces ensuring administration of policies, reservations, and equipment use.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and application of these principles within the context of health promotion and public health.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes some evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the administration and operation of signature services such as the Crowley Family MindSpa, Walters
  • Pet Therapy Program, Meditation Room, and Peer Leader Team; including identification of opportunities for increased utilization and meeting student needs. Provide direct supervision to a professional staff member, and indirect supervision to student employee team including training and ongoing development.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive Health Promotion communication strategy. Includes serving as the primary point of contact with Student Experience Communications.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Health Promotion department (outreach requests, IT requests, media requests, reviewing utilization data, etc.)
  • Serves on cross-departmental committees and initiatives.
  • Serve on Health Promotion Leadership team.
