Job Title: Associate Director, Assay & Analytics
Job Summary: We are seeking a driven and experienced Associate Director to lead our Assay & Analytics team within the R&D organization. This leadership role will oversee a team of scientists responsible for developing, validating, and executing high-throughput (HTP) screening assays that support our synthetic biology pipeline. The ideal candidate brings a balanced mix of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and people management along with proven experience in assay development, analytical instrumentation, and lab automation. This position plays a critical role in advancing our strain engineering and product development efforts.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the design, development, and validation of robust analytical methods for detecting and quantifying target molecules produced by engineered microorganisms (e.g., E. coli, S. cerevisiae).
* Oversee execution of weekly high throughput screening workflows, including culturing, reagent/sample prep, extractions, and downstream analysis using HPLC/UPLC and GC with various detectors (e.g., MS, DAD, FID).
* Manage timelines, deliverables, and resource planning to ensure high-quality analytical data is generated consistently and delivered across R&D programs.
* Optimize and scale HTP workflows to increase throughput, reproducibility, and data quality across assay platforms.
* Apply a broad range of analytical tools for characterization of fermentation samples and support of strain evaluation.
* Lead method development and data interpretation efforts using analytical instrumentation, including LC-MS, GC-MS, and UPLC systems (experience with Agilent and Thermo Q Exactive platforms preferred).
* Supervise and support operation, calibration, and maintenance of robotic liquid handlers (e.g., Bravo) and associated lab equipment.
* Drive implementation of best practices and continuous process improvements in screening and analytics workflows.
* Ensure accurate documentation of protocols and experiments; draft and maintain SOPs and contribute to internal knowledge bases.
* Communicate project updates, technical results, and strategic recommendations to stakeholders across various disciplines.
* Collaborate cross-functionally with molecular biologists, strain engineers, computational scientists, and fermentation teams to accelerate program progress.
* Take a lead role in data analysis, interpretation, and reporting to support decision-making at the program and organizational level.
* Maintain and enhance usage of LIMS platforms (experience with Benchling preferred).
Required Skills & Competencies:
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to convey technical content clearly to diverse audiences.
* Strong organizational and time-management abilities; capable of managing multiple projects in parallel with tight deadlines.
* Meticulous attention to detail, with a commitment to data integrity, safety, and lab best practices.
* Skilled in technical writing, protocol development, and documentation of workflows.
* Proven leadership experience; able to mentor and guide scientific staff while fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture.

Education & Experience:

* 5+ years of relevant experience in assay development and analytical instrumentation within the biotech, pharmaceutical, or life sciences industries.
* Hands-on expertise with mass spectrometry platforms (LC-MS, GC-MS), particularly Agilent and Thermo systems.
* Experience working in high-throughput environments and leading lab automation workflows for screening and analytics.
