Job Summary
This position reports to the Dean and is delegated division-wide and primary responsibility for overseeing directly or through subordinate managers, the Extension's administrative services, operations, and academic programs. This includes responsibility for the division's workforce development, strategic planning, finance, marketing, facilities, student services, and coordination with IT.
Regarding academic programs, this position will oversee the development and promotion of curriculum offerings, including online and in-person courses, as well as certificate programs. The incumbent provides leadership on adult learning and marginalized student community support, offering recommendations and building external partnerships to enhance programs and initiatives.
The Associate Dean, Marketing, Program Development and Academic Operations works independently to set objectives, develop policies, direct programs, and resolve complex, high-impact issues in collaboration with senior leadership; proactively identifies risks; and implements systems to protect organizational assets.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $128,800 - $159,650/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

Job Duties
45% - Chief Administrative Officer and Strategic Academic Planning
- Provides leadership in academic services. This includes identifying curriculum needs, opportunities for improvement and refinement, near-term tactics and long-term strategies, instructional quality assurance, and the recruitment, compensation, and support of instructors.
- Utilizes data analytics and dashboards to monitor student performance, enrollment trends and program outcomes, which in turn inform operational decisions to drive continuous improvement; through subordinate managers, identifies, designs and installs new programs and services; analyzes effectiveness, and makes strategic recommendations.
- Influences and interacts with higher-level management, colleagues and the dean on controversial situations and customer negotiations.
- Advises the dean, chairs and other senior managers on strategic program matters; coordinates activities for and/or with other UC locations or external universities.
- Plans, manages, and executes annual cultural, educational, and other flagship programs.
- Proactively identifies and implements measures which maintain a professional, positive, collegial, and collaborative culture throughout the division.
- Serves as the chief administrative officer for the division, overseeing the annual budget, revenue goals, and providing analysis that supports operations.
- Formulates policies and guidelines to carry out the division's mission for faculty, students and staff.
- Develops long-term strategies for the division, aligning with university goals and the broader educational landscape.
30% - Departmental Operations
- Oversees the division's administrative support functions which include contracts and grants, budgetary and financial management systems, facilities, organizational development, and communications.
- Sets annual marketing and business communication plans, priorities, initiatives and budget; manages the higher-level aspects of relationships with vendors, requests for proposal processes, as well as negotiations and contract administration.
- Provides direction, feedback, support for program initiatives; provides approvals for significant expenses; oversees revenue tracking, and staffing plans.
- Interfaces with Academic Senate and committees on new program and course proposals; works with Deans, Asst/Assoc Deans, AVCs, etc on approvals and partnerships for new programs such as the PostBacc program, and courses and programs for undergrad students, such as the First-Year Transition and Winter-Start International programs.
- Through subordinate managers, executes and tracks the effectiveness of marketing initiatives, tactics and communications; oversees public relations, outreach efforts, promotional events, recruitment events, and fundraising campaigns.
- Maintains integrity of the department through management and oversight of staff; instills strong management practices among subordinate managers.
- Collaborates with building operations and IT to identify and develop short and long-range space plans to support the division.
25% - Business Development
- Applies knowledge of the Extension's mission and goals to effectively research, monitor, and identify new potential sources of funding.
- Oversees and develops partnerships with schools, educational organizations, community groups, and corporate and private stakeholders to enhance field experiences, internships, and professional development for students, resulting in revenue growth.
- Oversees and develops proposals for funding and service provision.
- Serves as a key liaison to UCSC's associate deans, academic leaders, university-wide committees, task forces, and strategic planning groups, as well as community and corporate partners, to collaborate on projects and initiatives involving division programs and engagement.
- Strategizes and oversees the expansion of programs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Experience in a leadership role in the field of education, with a focus on developing new programs and/or growth of existing programs.
- Demonstrated experience developing new markets and driving business growth, and building corporate and private partnerships to advance a mission (eg: adult learning, student success, and educational scholarships).
- Demonstrated success in creating strategies for resource allocation; developing management and support structures to implement operational and strategic plans; and in establishing metrics for measuring department and employee goals.
- Experience interpreting and applying technical procedures, policies, and regulations, HR policies, labor laws, best practices, risk assessment, and mitigation to ensure compliance and organizational safety
- Strong knowledge of analytical and data presentation methods used to drive decision making.
- Excellent project management and time management skills.
- Skills in analyzing complex issues, identifying options, and driving process improvements in dynamic environments.
- Proficiency in using contemporary office productivity tools such as Microsoft or Google; collaboration tools such as Zoom; project management and workflow tools such as Asana; and social media platforms and tools such as Canva.
