The Position
East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD’s) Design Division, part of the Engineering and Construction Department, is seeking an Associate Civil/Electrical/Mechanical Engineer who is motivated, energetic, a team player, a strong project manager, and experienced with working on civil infrastructure projects. Reporting to a Senior Engineer, Associate Engineer is the registered professional engineer level position on the EBMUD engineering career ladder.
The Selected Individual For The Opening In Infrastructure Management Will Primarily Manage Various Engineering Design Projects Such As Reservoirs, Pumping Plants, Regulators, Rate Control Stations, And Water Treatment Projects. The Ideal Candidate Is Prepared To Perform a Mix Of The Following Tasks
- Manage multi-disciplinary design teams to develop water infrastructure improvement projects (water treatment plants, pumping plants, reservoirs, regulators, rate control stations).
- Overall management of multi-million-dollar capital improvement programs for water distribution facilities.
- Develop and track budgets, schedules, and the scopes of work for capital projects.
- Assist and guide project engineers in developing plans and specifications for contract documents.
- Manage consultants retained by EBMUD in the preparation of plans and specifications.
- Lead project status meetings and coordinate with EBMUD workgroups.
- Review and check engineering drawings, specifications, estimates, and reports for completeness, accuracy, and soundness of applied engineering principles and EBMUD standards.
- Prepare a variety of documents and materials, including technical reports, correspondence, and memos.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in an ABET-accredited civil, electrical, mechanical or environmental engineering curriculum OR a California EIT certificate;
- Four years of professional civil, electrical and/or mechanical engineering experience (subsequent to obtaining the degree), which is equivalent to two years of experience at EBMUD’s Assistant Engineer level; AND
- California registration as a Professional Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineer.

The Selection Process
- Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 9, 2025. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.
- Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.
- All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates receiving a passing score to be invited to a panel interview tentatively scheduled for late May or June 2025.
- Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
- The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
- All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
