We are seeking a proactive and technically strong tax professional to join our Finance team at NUS. This role goes beyond routine tax compliance - it offers an opportunity to be a key business partner and a driver of transformation within the University. You will play a vital role in supporting an evolving tax landscape, encompassing GST, withholding tax, property tax, and increasingly, cross-border and international tax matters.

As NUS grows its global footprint, we are strengthening our advisory capabilities and enhancing tax governance across the University. This role will contribute to that journey by improving end-to-end tax processes, reinforcing compliance and controls, and collaborating closely with faculties, research clusters, and administrative units.

Duties & Responsibilities

We are looking for someone who brings more than just tax technical skills — someone who understands the broader impact of tax on operations and is motivated to engage upstream with a process, controls, and business advisory mindset. Reporting to Associate Tax Director, this role is ideal for someone who is looking to make a meaningful impact and grow with a team that is committed to excellence, innovation, and driving transformation.

Tax Operations

  • Ensure accurate and timely tax compliance, reporting and accounting across various tax types such as Goods and Services Tax (GST), Withholding Tax (WHT), International Tax and Property Tax
  • Perform regular review of GL tax balances and reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness of tax reporting
  • Prepare and file various tax returns promptly and accurately
  • Address tax queries from internal stakeholders and relevant tax authorities (e.g. IRAS)
  • Work closely with business units to obtain necessary information for tax returns preparations/ assessments
  • Review IRAS notices and perform internal allocations for IRAS’ property tax assessment
  • Review, and update tax guides and internal policies to ensure relevance and clarity for end users (when required)

Tax Advisory, Partnering & Projects

  • Partner with other functions in NUS (e.g. Office of Legal Affairs, Office of Human Resources, Provost Office etc) to support faculties and research clusters in their expansion activities overseas to ensure that tax risks are proactively managed
  • Review agreements, accounting entries, and business transactions to assess and advise on tax implications
  • Provide tax advice and conduct training to enhance awareness and compliance across departments, to drive stakeholder engagement
  • Drive process improvements and automation to increase efficiency, strengthen controls, and reduce risk exposure for NUS.
  • Support the design and implementation of tax-related projects, including enhancements to the end-to-end WHT process and expansion into international tax advisory.
  • Provide property tax advisory to stakeholders
  • Take on ad-hoc assignments or University-wide initiatives (which may require cross-functional collaboration) as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or a professional qualification recognized by ISCA.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in GST, WHT, international tax, property tax and/or corporate tax.
  • Experiences in international tax, particularly China, India, Vietnam, US, Indonesia and Japan are strongly preferred.
  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA is an advantage.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel; familiarity with Power BI is an advantage.
  • Prior involvement in tax process automation or improvement initiatives is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills.
  • Team player with the ability to work independently when needed.
  • Demonstrates initiative, a can-do mindset, and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism when interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Shows commitment to continuous learning and growth in a dynamic and evolving environment
