Assist with all aspects of the Children’s Garden in Residence and related programs as directed by the Growing Good Program Coordinator. The Assistant Instructor assists with planning, preparation, documentation, and instruction within the Children’s Garden in Residence summer garden program and other programs as requested.

This position is based out of UROC (University Research Outreach and engagement Center) in North Minneapolis.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with, and support the lead coordinator in creating a positive garden program experience for all participants. .
• Enthusiastically help children to participate in garden activities, meeting children where they are and building positive relationships throughout the summer.
• Manage behavior issues, paying attention to the social and emotional safety of each child and discussing specific concerns with the Program Coordinator.
• Maintain a safe and fun learning environment for all participants, following safety procedures and aware of safe food handling practices and how to recognize and assist and act in emergency situations.
• Communicate positively and appropriately with partner leaders/adults/volunteers.
• Set-up, clean-up and preparation of materials as directed.

WORK SCHEDULE: 360 hours total

Varied schedule available between 4/28/25-6/16/25, and 8/18/25-10/31/25: Hours vary based on events and

preparation, planning, and documentation hours scheduled with the Growing Good Coordinator.

Anticipated hours no to exceed ~36 hours

Summer Work schedule: 9 weeks/ 36 hours/week (Monday-Friday) 6/16/25-8/23/25 specific schedule to be

determined with the Growing Good Coordinator: anticipated hours ~324 hours.

The hours flex depending on the week and business need. There isn't a standard hours as this is a 67 day position.

Required

• Enthusiasm for working with kids with patience & a sense of humor
• The desire to work in a natural setting
• Previous experience working with children in community or education program
• Demonstrated leadership in team or group activities
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to walk, bend, and lift 20 pounds, working indoors and outdoors
• Must successfully pass a background check
  
  

Preferred

• Prior experience in outdoor education, informal education, or classroom settings.
• College coursework/degree and/or work experience related to horticulture, natural sciences, nutrition, agriculture, youth development, youth education or related field.
• Prior experience with the UMN Arboretum Growing Good program.
  
  

Pay Range: $18.00 per hour
