Summary

The Department of Linguistics at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a professional track (non-tenure track) instructor in American Sign Language (ASL) at the rank of Assistant Professor of Instruction. The position begins on August 16, 2025. This will be a fixed-term, one-year contract, but the expectation is for annual renewal, contingent on funding, programmatic need, and performance. Duties include teaching, service, and advising. Teaching will include in-person, face-to-face lower and upper division courses in ASL and related topics. Service will include general service to the department, college, and university, as well as specific service helping plan and manage the ASL program. Undergraduate student advising will focus largely on students minoring in ASL. Responsibilities will also include curriculum development and revision, supervising student assistants, and other duties supporting the ASL program as needed. Applicants must hold a Master's degree in linguistics, deaf studies, or deaf education, or another ASL-related field, and have at least five years of college-level ASL teaching experience. An ASLPI- score of 4 or above / SLPI- Adv or above is required. Preferred qualifications include skill in filming, editing, and uploading videos for instructional or professional use, and utilizing common video editing software and online platforms. Preferred qualifications also include experience or familiarity with the Canvas Instructure leaning management system, as well as familiarity with the TRUE+WAY ASL curriculum and its integration into ASL instruction and the Canvas learning management system. Applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement describing teaching experience and philosophy, Master's degree transcript, ASLPI/SLPI score, and three letters of recommendation. The department will begin reviewing applications March 31, 2025 and continue until the position is filled.
