Summary

The Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD) at the George Washington University in Washington, DC is dedicated to the mission of leading innovation through learning. The Office of Student Life (OSL) supports GSEHD’s mission by proactively developing relationships with prospective applicants and students, and helping them navigate their academic journey from admission through graduation.


The Office of Student Life seeks a motivated individual to serve as the Assistant Director, Recruitment and Admissions. The Assistant Director plays a critical role in recruiting qualified candidates to GSEHD; the position actively contributes to the development of the strategic and tactical marketing and recruitment plan for the School. This position provides important insights and recommendations, based on recruitment data and experience, for achieving annual enrollment goals. This role requires occasional evening and weekend work, as well as travel of up to 20%.


This position represents GSEHD both on campus and off campus in order to build relationships, evaluate admissions applications, and make recommendations regarding admissions decisions.


Responsibilities include:

  • Communicate with applicants regarding GSEHD’s portfolio of graduate programs, the admission process, tuition support programs, and the status of their application.
  • Execute strategic recruitment initiatives.
  • Analyze recruitment data.
  • Plan and execute outreach initiatives, representing the university at both on-campus and off campus events—including information sessions, interviews, college fairs, open houses, and departmental functions—and coordinate special programs and projects that support admissions and recruitment efforts.
  • Collaborate with GSEHD faculty and staff to develop a deep knowledge of program curriculum and content that is essential to successful strategic support and development of prospective student interest.
  • Assist with developing communication plans for domestic and international graduate students, with expectations to enhance communication efforts with targeted populations as well as the overall prospective applicant and admitted student pool.
  • Provide process improvement recommendations for office procedures and policies.


Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.


This is a hybrid position, meaning some days will be in the office on-campus in Washington, DC and some days remote.


Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

We seek a colleague who will contribute meaningfully to our academic community through a blend of these experiences and professional skills:

  • Strong interest in and experience in Admissions, Student Services, or Marketing is highly desired.
  • Familiarity with CRM databases and application software, including implementation and upgrades. Knowledge of Slate and Salesforce is highly desirable.
  • Experience coordinating and executing in-person and virtual events. Familiarity with virtual event platforms is highly desired (e.g., Webex).
  • Customer service skills, including the ability to work with a diverse group of individuals, prospective students, faculty, alumni, staff, and current students.
  • Experience with adult learners and graduate-level admissions-recruitment is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present effectively in person and through virtual platforms.
