Overview:
Since its founding in 1950, the University of Massachusetts Foundation has been dedicated to promoting the growth and progress of the University of Massachusetts. One of the primary roles of the Foundation has been to invest and grow endowment funds in support of the school’s broader mission of an accessible and affordable, first-rate education. In addition, the Foundation partners with the five campuses on programs and initiatives that further enhance and fulfill its founding mission.
Primary Purpose of Position:
The full-time Assistant Controller reports directly to the Controller and plays a key role in supporting the Finance department by maintaining financial procedures and ensuring compliance. This position is responsible for managing the Foundation’s monthly close process, overseeing the annual audit and tax filings, and leading other assigned financial projects.
Essential Functions:
· Record and approve accounting transactions in accordance with GAAP and non-profit accounting standards; review and post journal entries.
· Lead the month-end close process:
· Support the year-end audit process:
· Prepare documentation for Form 990 and State Non-Profit tax filings.
· Manage endowment distribution processes across all UMass campuses.
· Assist in annual budget preparation, review budget and forecast proposals, collaborate with each department leaders to provide supporting documentation and justifications.
· Collaborate with HR to ensure accurate payroll recording; review and approve biweekly payroll; ensure compliance with payroll tax reporting (W-2).
· Supervise accounting staff to ensure timely and accurate completion of daily and weekly tasks.
· Contribute to policy and procedure updates to strengthen internal controls across all accounting functions.
· Oversee UMass Foundation’s purchase card program.
· Identify opportunities for process automation and efficiency improvements; streamline workflows.
· Support ad-hoc financial analyses and special projects as needed.
Requirements and Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required; CPA designation preferred
· Minimum of 5 years of financial reporting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role
· Experience with endowment and foundation accounting, preferably within a higher education environment
· Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with advanced functions and financial modeling a plus
