Summary

Position Summary: In conjunction with the Camp Director, the Assistant Camp Director will assist in the planning, supervision, and implementation of a well-rounded camp program. The program developed will strive to meet the social, physical, spiritual, and cognitive development needs of children, ages 5 -15, at the Westport Weston Family YMCA. They will also closely work with the Camp Director in supervising and training the Camp Staff.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • To be a role model for the participants while demonstrating the YMCA Four Core Values of Honesty, Responsibility, Respect, and Caring.
  • With the Camp Mahackeno Director, plan and conduct staff orientation for the Camp Mahackeno staff.
  • With the Camp Mahackeno Director, hire and train camp counselors and volunteers.
  • Supervise counselors and volunteers on a daily basis to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
  • When Camp Nurse is not available: Act in the role of Camp Nurse – primary caregiver; attend to any injury, keep records of incidents (as required by state license) and inventory first aid supplies on a regular basis as needed.
  • In conjunction with the Camp Mahackeno Director, plan and supervise daily activity schedule and special events.
  • Communicate professionally with parents; Resolve issues as they arise.
  • Keep a strictly professional relationship with all Camp Staff.
  • In conjunction with the Camp Mahackeno Director, keep detailed records on attendance and incidents/accidents.
  • Review, Monitor and approve timecards on a biweekly basis. Ensure the accurate tracking of staff hours.
  • Communicate any special circumstances, problems, accidents or activities to the Camp Mahackeno Director daily.
  • Administer discipline to Camp Staff as soon as a problem arises. Provide follow-up to the Camp Director.
  • Possess a degree in Elementary Education, or Early Childhood Development, Recreation, or a related field and/or have experience working with elementary school children.
  • Experience as a camp counselor required.
  • Lifeguard and/or CPR certification required.
  • Must have the ability to supervise counselors and volunteers and to communicate goals of the YMCA.
  • Experience in arts and crafts, sports, music, and nature is helpful.
  • Current certifications in medication and epi-pen training.
