Summary

Description

Performs maintenance and repair work on automobiles, trucks, tractors, graders, caterpillars, gas and diesel engines, and other related equipment.

  • Inspects, trouble-shoots, and overhauls transmissions, electrical systems, cooling systems, valves, pistons, hydraulic lifts, carburetors, and other related systems.

Performs safety checks on light, heavy, and related equipment.

Enters daily repair and maintenance activity and use of inventory into computer system.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

One year certificate from an accredited college or technical school and four to six years of progressively responsible related experience or a combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Licenses and Certifications: Valid Driver’s License, Valid State Driver's License Class B within six (6) months of hire, Welding Certification (depending upon assignment).

Knowledge Of

  • Methods, practices, materials, and tools of the light and heavy equipment and vehicle mechanical trade.
  • Safety precautions and hazards as they related to equipment maintenance and repair
  • Gasoline and diesel engines and their operations.
  • Practices, methods, and tools of the welding and blacksmith trades.
  • Recordkeeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.

Skills And Abilities

  • The use and care of the tools and equipment utilized in the performance of the essential functions of the job.
  • Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Using mathematics.

Salary: County positions have a five-step salary range. Increases, which are based on merit, are scheduled after the first six months, then annually thereafter until the top step is reached.

Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance: The County and the employee share the cost of an employee selected health care plan.

Holidays: Mendocino observes 11 paid holidays per year. In addition, each employee is granted 24 hours of personal leave time upon the successful completion of the probationary period.

Life Insurance: Coverage of $20,000 is provided by the County.

Sick Leave: Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of 1.25 days per months, or 15 days per year.

Vacation: Accrues at the rate of two weeks per year for three years. Three weeks per year after three years, four weeks after eight years and five weeks after 15 years.

Retirement: Covered under Social Security and the 1937 act, both employees and the County pay into the retirement fund.
