Job Description Summary:

As an adjunct faculty member within the College of Podiatric Medicine, the incumbent is responsible for teaching the General Medicine II course.

Faculty members are assigned to develop and teach the course/rotation(s) for which they are qualified by education, certification, and professional experience. Instructional duties include planning courses/rotations and curricula, and evaluating courses/rotations. Related duties include academic advising of students, supervision of independent study projects, maintaining office hours, and attending departmental meetings when required.

Duties And Responsibilities

(80%) Teaching and Learning

  • Develops instructional materials and student learning activities for instruction based on program objectives and within the context of the program’s philosophy.
  • Collaborates with other faculty members to coordinate theory and clinical instruction to provide an optimal learning environment for students.
  • Selects and uses a variety of situation appropriate teaching methods and strategies, including but not limited to: lecture, discussion, role playing, group activities, audiovisual and technical materials.
  • Communicates effectively with students and peers in teaching material and in the achievement of identified learning goals.

(10%) Academic Advising

  • The adjunct faculty member is available during regularly posted office hours and by appointment to provide academic advising to students.

(10%) Other duties as assigned

  • Responds to voice or e-mail messages within 48 hours.
  • Maintains licensure/certification required for the teaching assignment.
  • Arrives to classroom in a punctual manner. Notifies the CPM Administrative Coordinator regarding illnesses/unavoidable absence in advance of classroom sessions.
  • Actively participates in curriculum development activities.
  • Participates in board preparation activities as assigned.

Skills And Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to calculate exam scores and grades.
  • Ability to learns and maintain skills associated with distance learning (learning management system, video conference teaching, lecture recording, etc.).

Education And/or Experience

  • MD, DO, DNP or PA degree (required).
  • Medical residency completion (preferred).
  • Prior experience teaching General Medicine courses and/or clinical rotations to medical students (preferred).

Physical Efforts

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and receive detailed information through verbal and written communication.

Pay Range:

Based on teaching assignment, a reasonable estimate for this position is between $600 - $8000.

Samuel Merritt University currently provides base salary ranges for all positions-on job advertisements-in the United States based on local requirements. Individual compensation will ultimately be determined based on a variety of relevant factors including but-not limited to qualifications, geographic location, and other relevant skills.
