Accounting Manager – Construction Industry
We are seeking a full-time non-degreed Accounting Manager to lead and optimize our financial operations within a dynamic, fast-paced construction environment. Reporting directly to the Controller, this pivotal role encompasses oversight of payroll, billing, accounts payable/receivable, financial reporting, and internal controls, with a strong emphasis on compliance, accuracy, and strategic alignment with business objectives.
As the Accounting Manager, you will collaborate closely with the Controller, senior leadership, and project teams to ensure the integrity of financial data, support external audits, and drive process improvements across the back-office functions. Your expertise will help sustain operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and financial transparency across all projects and departments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including payroll processing, A/P, A/R, general ledger management, and financial reporting
- Lead the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Supervise and streamline project billing processes, monitor collections, and ensure proper revenue recognition
- Manage union and non-union payroll operations, ensuring compliance with prevailing wage laws and labor regulations
- Maintain and audit financial records, employee files, and contractor documentation
- Collaborate in the development of annual budgets, forecasts, and project cost tracking, including WIP schedules
- Ensure timely completion of tax filings and regulatory reporting (e.g., payroll tax, corporate filings)
- Liaise with external auditors for financial, 401(k), and tax audits
- Identify and implement enhancements to accounting systems and processes to improve efficiency and accuracy
- Mentor junior accounting staff and support their development
Qualifications:
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Bachelor’s preferred)
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within the construction or related industries
- Strong command of GAAP and financial reporting requirements
- Proficient in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office; experience with construction accounting software is a plus
- In-depth knowledge of construction billing, cost accounting, and WIP tracking
- Experience with union payroll and labor compliance
- Proven ability to communicate financial information clearly and work cross-functionally
- High attention to detail with strong organizational and problem-solving skills
