PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Help meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including self-help, assessment management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
* High school diploma or GED certificate
* Meet state certification requirements
* Minimum 48 college hours
Special Knowledge/Skills:
* Demonstrated interest in and aptitude for the work to be performed
* Work well with students with disabilities
* Ability to communicate effectively
* Follow written and verbal directives
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
* Prepare for classroom activities under the direction of the Special Education teacher.
* Work with small groups of handicapped students to reinforce materials initially introduced by the teacher and assist students who need special attention.
* Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work planned by the teacher for handicapped students.
* Arrange audiovisual equipment and assist with classroom experiments, demonstrations, etc.
* Check notebooks, correct papers and supervise testing and make-up work.
* Assist in remedial drill work, reading and storytelling.
* Assist small groups of handicapped students in the learning resources centers.
* Keep records of student performance and progress in reading, language development, math or other skills and assist in program evaluation.
* Prepare visual aids and bulletin board displays for the teacher.
* Locate reference or teaching materials.
* Organize, prepare and distribute school and classroom supplies.
* Participate in inservice training program.
* Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.
* Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
* Perform other work-related duties as assigned by Special Education teacher.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; [P.E. teachers: automated external defibrillator (AED)]
Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking
Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment
Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
In Pre-K classrooms as well as special needs of students, staff aides will address personal/hygiene needs of students such as assistance in toileting, washing of hands, changing of clothing when soiled, etc.
FOR INSTRUCTION OUTSIDE A TYPICAL CLASSROOM SETTING (e.g. P.E. Teachers, Fine Arts Instructors, Shop Instructors, etc.) the following physical requirements must be addressed:
* Constant walking, standing, and movement to ensure safety and well-being of students in large open areas such as playgrounds, gyms, football fields, shop areas, etc.
* Physical activity, modeling, and directing instruction in front of large group setting of students in order to define/model expected and appropriate behaviors
* Lifting, carrying, or pulling of instructional equipment such as balls, instruments, cases, tools, etc. which are necessary to the instructional delivery of the lesson
* Exposure to various climate settings and temperatures relative to classroom instruction within/outside school building/facility
