A dental assistant plays a crucial role in a dental office. Not only do they need to provide support to dentists and hygienists, but it is also the job of the dental assistant to ensure dental operations run smoothly. If you are looking for a great new job as a dental assistant, you will need to be able to show you have these important skills in your cover letter.
In our cover letter example and writing guide, we will show you what to include to ensure your cover letter stands out to a hiring manager. Here’s what we will be covering:
What should your dental assistant cover letter include?
What can you write in the introduction of the cover letter?
What information can you give in the body of the cover letter?
How to write a cover letter closing
When writing your dental assistant cover letter, you should show you have experience preparing dental instruments, working with dental x-rays, providing patient care, and even performing office management tasks. All of this information should be laid out in an easy-to-read and professional manner.
The first step in writing your cover letter is deciding who to address it to. Naturally, you will start with your contact information, then proceed to your contact’s information. If you don’t know the name of your contact, our quick guide on using ‘to whom it may concern’ may prove helpful.
You will then include an introduction, the body of your cover letter, and a closing. We will cover what to include in each of these sections in the paragraphs below.
The goal of your cover letter is to let a hiring manager know that you have the experience and drive needed to be an effective dental assistant. It all starts with the introduction. This is the paragraph that immediately follows your salutation.
You should begin by mentioning the position you are applying for and the company itself. You can then include a brief introduction to your specific skills and experience. You should also show you are excited about the potential of joining the dental team at this specific company.
Dear Ms. Emily Hayes,
I am writing to apply for the position of Dental Assistant at SmileCare Dental Clinic. With proven expertise in the field, I am confident in my ability to contribute valuable skills and knowledge to your team.
Next comes the body of your cover letter. This is the section where you put your experience as a dental assistant to work for you. Start by reviewing the job listing to learn which of your skills are most important in this role. You should use what’s mentioned in the job listing to shape what skills you mention in this portion of the cover letter.
One thing that can make writing this section easier is breaking it down into three sections:
Why you? Which of your dental assistant skills will make you the best candidate for the open role? What is it about your experience that will help you fit in with this specific team? The goal here is to convince a hiring manager that there is no other option besides you for this open role.
Why here? Next, you need to explain why you are interested in joining this specific dental team. Perhaps you love the services the office provides or you are looking for a specific type of team to work with. Whatever your reasons for wanting to join this dental care team, you should include them in the body of your cover letter.
Why now? Finally, you’ll want to leave the hiring manager with an idea as to why you are the perfect fit for the dental office right now. Why should they hire you for this specific role and not for one down the road? What is it about where you are at in your career that makes this the perfect opening for you and you the perfect candidate for the dental office?
We have even more guidance and tips on what to include in a cover letter body over in our blog post.
As the enclosed resume illustrates, through my experience as a Dental Assistant, I have developed a comprehensive understanding of dental procedures and patient care. I am well-versed in assisting dentists during examinations, performing and developing dental X-rays, sterilizing instruments, and providing chairside support. This experience will enable me to efficiently and effectively contribute to the smooth running of your dental practice.
Additionally, please consider the following highlights of my relevant qualifications:
Adept at performing administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, processing insurance claims, and managing patient records.
Strong communication skills with a history of establishing rapport with my patients, making them feel at ease, and providing compassionate support.
Excellent attention to detail and a high level of precision in my work, which will ensure your patients receive the best dental care possible.
Your goal with the closing of your cover letter should be to tie everything together. You again want to touch on your skills and how they will benefit the dental office. Plus, you will want to show your excitement as well as your gratitude for the position.
How will your skills benefit the dental office? Show a hiring manager exactly what you are bringing to the table. “With a track record of delivering timely and efficient dental assistant services to dentists during examinations, I am excited about contributing to the success of your dental team.”
Include a Call to Action. Always include a call to action at the very end of your cover letter to ask a hiring manager to call you to set up an interview. “Thank you for the opportunity. I look forward to hearing from you to schedule an interview at your convenience.”
I would welcome the opportunity to discuss further how my skills and experience align with the requirements of the Dental Assistant position at SmileCare Dental Clinic. I am excited about the possibility of contributing to your team and look forward to scheduling an interview at your convenience.
Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
Samantha White
