We all remember our favorite actor that really inspired us with a performance and maybe even influenced our future career. Being an actor can offer an exciting and rewarding path, but it can also be extremely challenging and competitive. Whether you decide to perform in theater, act on TV, or pursue the dizzy heights of movie stardom, you’ll need to attract the casting agent's attention to land those all-important auditions.

In this cover letter guide, along with the corresponding actor cover letter example, we’ll look at exactly how to draft a cover letter that can help you get noticed, including:

What should your actor cover letter include?

Making a great first impression is vital for an actor. Your actor cover letter should highlight key performances to grab the attention of casting agents, producers, and directors, in full alignment with the requirements of the advertised role. This brief (usually one page) letter should present you as the best actor for the job.

Your cover letter should include your contact information, details of the organization you are applying to, the date, and a formal greeting. Following this, you’ll need a compelling introduction to hook the reader, three short paragraphs that outline why you, why here, and why now, followed by a convincing finale with a call to action. We’ll go over these elements in detail in the following paragraphs.

What can you write in the introduction of your cover letter?

A cover letter’s introduction needs to hook the reader and encourage the hiring manager to read on. When you’re in a competitive industry, it’s crucial to catch attention and stand out amongst the competition. The most common problem with a cover letter introduction is that it can be very generic. Once the casting agent has read one or two, they’re likely to all blend into one and become pretty forgettable.

Highlight your passion and enthusiasm for acting. Conduct some background research and review the job description so you have a good sense of what the organization is looking to achieve and how your role fits into these goals. You can then reference this in your introduction. Perhaps they are looking to diversify their theater productions, and your experience aligns with their new direction. If so, highlight this.

Dear David Wells:

I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in the lead role at Talent & Crew LLC, as advertised. With a deep passion for the performing arts and a diverse background in theatrical productions, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute my skills and creativity to your esteemed theater company.

What should be mentioned in the cover letter body for an acting role?

The body of the actor cover letter is where you expand on why you are the perfect actor for the company, why you have been drawn to the job opening, and the reasons behind your career move.

An effective approach is to break into it three different sections:

  1. Why you. Outline your background relevant to the acting opportunity, with particular focus on key achievements, skills, and expertise. Focus on your successes as an actor. This could include acting in diverse roles that have enabled you to grow as a performer. If you’ve been part of any notable or successful projects, then highlight this information. Organizations are always on the lookout for actors who can connect with diverse characters and have received positive feedback for these performances.

  2. Why here. Why do you want to work for this particular theater or organization? Do you admire their strong reputation? Have you connected with their vision and values? Whatever the reason, communicating this via your cover letter will demonstrate your passion for joining their team.

  3. Why now. Perhaps you’re a budding actor just starting out in your career or a seasoned actor looking for more challenging roles. Communicating your career objectives and how you’ve arrived at this point in your career will allow your personality to shine through in your cover letter.

How to write a cover letter closing

The closing section of your actor cover letter needs to thank the hiring manager for their time and encourage them to get in touch with you. This is also a golden opportunity to deliver a strong finish to your cover letter. This doesn’t need to be a long paragraph (1-2 sentences is fine). Here’s some inspiration:

  • Emphasize your passion and commitment. This should demonstrate the impact you will have in the acting role. “Recognized for my passion for storytelling, collaborative approach, and commitment to delivering compelling performances, I’m ready to deliver the same results for (Theater Name).”

  • Include a Call to Action. Encourage them to take the next step. “I look forward to speaking with you and learning more about the (Position Title) position and (Company Name). Until then, thank you for your time and consideration.”
