While the iPhone might not be the first tool you think of when creating a resume, it can be done, and pretty efficiently at that. There are a couple of advantages to using your iPhone:
You can edit your resume wherever you are. If you’re on a laptop using Word, for example, you can only make changes when you’re there. But an iPhone allows you to edit your resume at any time and location.
It's easy to do. Templates are easily available and just require you to add in your information.
If you’re out and about and discover a job you’d be perfect for, you can tailor your resume on your phone and submit it immediately.
You have two great options for creating a resume on your iPhone: using the Pages app, or using a service such as Career.io's Resume Builder. We’ll take you step-by-step through each method so you can find the one that works best for you.
Most iPhones come with the Pages app already installed, but if yours doesn’t, you can download it through Apple’s app store.
Once you have it installed, go ahead and open the app. Then, follow these steps:
1. Tap the + sign in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
2. Select “Choose a Template.”
3. If you scroll down a bit, you’ll see a “Resume” section. Select “See All.”
4. Select a resume template that works for you, and then fill in the sections with your information. That’s it! Make sure to save it to your Files on your iPhone.
If you’d prefer to use Career.io’s templates, follow these steps:
1. Go to Career.io. In the menu stack in the upper right-hand corner, select "Services."
2. Select “Find a new job”
3. Select “Resume Builder.”
4. Then, simply follow the onscreen instructions to craft your perfect resume!
Is it better to upload a resume in Word or PDF?
A PDF might be your best bet for several reasons. First, there are no compatibility issues, as there might be with Word. It also keeps your formatting intact, so that there's no problem reading it. It's also not possible to make text changes on a PDF, so a recruiter can't accidentally delete sections or lines on your resume. However, always follow the instructions in the job description. If the job description specifically states to submit as a Word document, then that’s the format to use.
If you’re using Career.io’s Resume Builder or the Pages app, you can download your resume as either a Word doc or a PDF automatically. However, if you have it on your laptop and want it also stored on your iPhone, you don’t have to email it to yourself! Here’s how to save a document as a PDF, depending on where the document is saved:
If you have your resume stored in Google Drive, from your laptop simply select New> File Upload>select Resume in PDF. Your document will show up on your iPhone within a minute or so.
For most other documents, just tap the Share button (the little box with the upwards arrow)>Markup>Done>Save File To, and select your location and file name.
If you don’t have the Markup option, open the resume and select that Share icon, then choose Print. Once the option to select your print pops up, do a "long press" on the Preview at the bottom. The document will appear on your screen. If you tap to select it, a PDF will automatically be created. Then use that Share button again to save it on your phone or email/text it to a contact.
Did you know that around 66% of all job applications are performed on a Smartphone? The percentage for “gig workers” tends to be a bit higher (86%) and is also higher than average in transportation (72%), hospitality/tourism (72%), real estate (69%), and warehousing and logistics (69%) industries.
It sounds obvious, but your laptop and iPhone are different pieces of equipment, and documents will show up differently on each. If you’re going to be using your iPhone for creating, downloading, and sending a resume, there are a few things to keep in mind to make it as easy for a recruiter to read:
Use abbreviations when possible, such as the “K” symbol instead of “thousand," and use numerals for dates.
Eliminate any unnecessary or “filler” words, such as jargon (a good idea in general) as well as extraneous articles like “a,” “an,” and “the.”
Use a one-column format and fonts such as Times New Roman, Verdana, or Georgia.
Don’t use graphics, color, or text boxes.
Make sure the most important information is at the top of the page, such as contact info, accomplishments, career summary, and relevant skills.
Paragraphs should be no longer than four lines, and make sure there is enough space between bullet points.
Email the document to yourself before sending it out to make sure it looks good.
