  • Have a clear subject line. Hiring managers have to read lots of email. Don’t let yours get lost in their Inbox. Your subject line needs to be professional and state the purpose of your email. Follow any instructions provided. If they don’t give any directions about the subject line, then here is an example of a good subject line, “Application for Marketing Manager Position - Beau Jones.”

  • Appropriate recipient. It's important to use a professional and appropriate opening. The words “Dear” and “Hello” are universally acceptable greetings. Make sure to use the name of the person you are emailing, if at all possible. Otherwise, “Hiring manager” or “HR department” are okay.

  • Introduction. Start with a short introduction, including your name, the position you are applying for, and any other specific information they are requesting. Your first paragraph states the purpose of your email and expresses your interest in the position and explains how you found out about the job.

  • The body. The next section of the email is where you talk about your relevant qualifications, experience, and skills. Highlight what makes you a good choice for the position. Give examples of accomplishments and achievements. But keep it concise and on point.
