You’ve probably heard the hype about the wide range of new AI tools, but can they help you with getting a job? Check out our article, and we’ll tell you about using AI tools to prepare for job interviews.
You no doubt have heard about new tools driven by artificial intelligence (AI) technology, and you may have even used a few. Can you leverage these tools to help you get a job? Absolutely. The new natural language processing (NLP) models (commonly called chatbots), such as ChatGPT or Google Bard, are free and can be used to help you land a new job. We’ll explain how you can use these tools for your next job interview.
This article will cover the following topics:
Getting ready to use AI tools for your interview preparation
Steps for using AI language models to prepare for your interview
Before you jump into ChatGPT or any other chatbot, you need to gather some information to aid you:
Do your homework on the company and the job you’re applying for. Go to their website and look at the company’s mission statement, goals, and other key information.
Get a copy of the job listing and anything else you can find about the position. If you’ve already been in contact with someone about the job, have their emails handy.
Gather your resume, cover letter, references, and any other supporting information that you might use in applying for a job.
All of this information will be important to supply to ChatGPT (or your AI tool of choice) to allow it to generate the best possible responses.
Let’s look at each of the steps we covered and see where these tools can make your preparations better and easier. We’ll give you the area of focus for each ChatGPT query and an example of how to enter the question:
1. Company information. Now that you have researched the company yourself, you can use a chatbot to summarize key company information and point out some things that you may not have seen.
Input: “I am applying for the role of <job title> with company <ABC>. Give me information about the company relevant for my application.”
2. Job information. ChatGPT (or another AI tool) can also give you insights on the job you’re applying for that will be good to know and will help you prepare interview talking points.
Input: “Provide information on important responsibilities, skills, and experience related to <job title> with the company <ABC> relevant to applying and interviewing for this position. This is the job description: <paste job description>”
3. Sample interview questions. Now you’re ready to generate some example interview questions.
Input: “I am applying for the role of <job title> with company <ABC>. My resume is <paste resume information>. The job description is <paste job listing>. Create a list of interview questions relevant to the role, job listing, and given my background.
4. Suggested responses to questions. Once you’ve gone over the questions and formulated how you would answer them, you can use the AI to check your answers.
Input: “I am applying for the role of <job title> with company <ABC>. If the interviewer asks <insert question>, is this a good response? <insert your proposed response>
5. Questions for the interviewer. When you interview for a position, it is a good strategy to have some questions prepared that you can ask the interviewer. AI can help you with this too.
Input: “I am applying for the role of <job title> with company <ABC>. The job description is <paste job listing>. What are some questions that I can ask an interviewer about the company and the job position?”
6. Simulate an interview. Your last and most important task is to practice for your interview. Once again, AI can assist you with this by rehearsing the interview with you.
Input: “I am applying for the role of <job title> with company <ABC>. The job description is <paste job listing>. Simulate the role of the interviewer and ask me interview questions one at a time and assess my answers.”
Input: “I am applying for the role of retail store manager with Petsmart. The job description is here: https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/retail-store-manager-at-petsmart-3662069670/ Create an interview question based on the job description.”
ChatGPT Answer: Certainly, based on the job description you provided, here is an interview question that is relevant to the role of a Retail Store Manager at Petsmart: "Petsmart places a strong emphasis on delivering exceptional customer experiences. Can you provide an example of how you have effectively coached and trained your team to provide knowledgeable and empathetic customer service in a retail environment?"
Also, remember that you don’t have to use these specific prompts. AI NLP tools are made to mimic human conversations. So, once you get going, you can proceed and ask questions in a natural way. For the above example, you could next ask, “What would a good response be?” Then, keep going from there to ensure you’ll excel in your next interview!
