Job Description:
The Boston Globe is seeking a creative, collaborative Designer to help shape the visual presentation of our journalism across both print and digital platforms. This role is responsible for designing compelling features and layouts that elevate our storytelling, engage audiences, and reflect the authority and innovation of the Globe’s journalism.
This Designer will partner closely with editors, reporters, photographers, and product teams to conceive and execute ambitious visual presentations — from daily news packages to signature enterprise and feature projects.

Responsibilities:

<li>Design engaging layouts and visual presentations for both print and digital news properties</li>
<li>Partner across the newsroom to conceive and execute features that extend and deepen the impact of our journalism</li>
<li>Design and build custom digital story elements using HTML and CSS, including visual modules, interactive features, and responsive layouts</li>
<li>Prototype and implement web-based storytelling components within the Globe’s publishing systems</li>
<li>Collaborate with product, engineering, and editorial teams to develop new digital storytelling tools and formats</li>
<li>Experiment with new storytelling formats, digital tools, and visual approaches</li>
<li>Translate complex reporting into clear, compelling visual experiences</li>
<li>Collaborate with editors, reporters, photographers, and developers to bring projects to life</li>
<li>Help create and commission photography, illustration, artwork, and other visual elements</li>
<li>Ensure visual consistency and uphold Globe brand standards across platforms</li>
<li>Work efficiently and collaboratively under tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom</li>
<li>Contribute to evolving design standards, templates, and best practices for both print and digital platforms</li>

Qualifications: 
<ul>
<li>Minimum of 3 years of experience designing for journalism or a newsroom environment</li>
<li>Experience designing for both print and digital platforms strongly preferred</li>
<li>Demonstrated ability to create engaging feature layouts and visual storytelling packages</li>
<li>Strong typographic, visual, and information design skills</li>
<li>Technical proficiency with content management systems</li>
<li>Working knowledge of HTML</li>
<li>Familiarity with project management systems and collaborative workflows</li>
<li>Ability to manage multiple assignments and prioritize effectively</li>

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.
The hourly rate range for this role is $41.00 - $46.75.
This range reflects the band for this role. We are committed to fair and market-informed compensation. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates could be hired within the midpoint of the range. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by their particular combination of skills, experience, and qualifications.
This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.

ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT
 
The Radiocommunication Bureau (BR) is responsible for the application of the Radio Regulations and for technical and administrative support of ITU World and Regional Radiocommunication Conferences, Radiocommunication Assemblies and Study Groups. The Bureau also carries out the international regulatory processes for registration of frequency assignments and satellite orbits and assists administrations in their coordination and implementation of frequency spectrum and orbit requirements as well as in resolving cases of harmful interference. It provides the specialised technical secretariat for the work of the Radiocommunication Study Groups and the Radiocommunication Assembly in the development of recommendations for spectrum utilisation and radio system characteristics. The BR is organised into four Departments: Space Services Department, Terrestrial Services Department, Informatics, Administration and Publications Department and the Study Groups Department.
 
The Informatics, Administration and Publications Department (IAP) comprises of fourDivisions: Space Applications Software (SAS), Terrestrial Applications Software (TAS), Common Software Platform Division (CSP) and Business Operations and Planning Division (BOP). The Department is responsible for the development and maintenance of software and related tools used by the BR as well as software adapted for national frequency management units, providing the necessary user support for the areas concerned. It carries out studies related to policies for the technologies to be used for the information and computational systems within the BR and with administrations in the fields of management of the radio frequency spectrum and the various satellite orbits. The Department is responsible for managing all aspects of the BR's operations, including the development of BR operational plans, organizational support of ITU-R conferences and meetings, BR project management processes and procedures, BR text editing and publications, as well as promotion and membership. The Department is also responsible for human resources management and planning for the BR.

- Participate in the creation and modification of graphics, including illustrations, logos, layouts and photos, in accordance with Radiocommunications Bureau (BR) editorial and visual standards. 
-  Contribute to the preparation of other drawings and visual materials as requested by the BR. 
- Assist in reviewing figures and graphics and in identifying editorial and visual corrections under the guidance of the Technical Designer. 
- Assist in preparing curves, charts and graphs from tables, mathematical formulae and databases, ensuring accuracy and clarity of presentation.
