Under the direction of the Library Director, the Children’s Librarian provides programs, collections, resources and services for children and families; supports early literacy and lifelong learning; and helps maintain a welcoming library environment. Plans, promotes and presents storytimes, early literacy activities, Summer Reading programs, seasonal programs and special events for children of varying ages and abilities. Coordinates program materials, setup, registration and evaluation and uses participation and feedback to improve future programs. Provides readers’ advisory, reference assistance and resource recommendations to children, families, caregivers and educators.

<h1>Essential Functions</h1>
<ul>
<li>Plans, promotes and presents storytimes, early literacy activities, Summer Reading programs, seasonal programs and special events for children of varying ages and abilities.</li>
<li>Coordinates program materials, setup, registration and evaluation and uses participation and feedback to improve future programs.</li>
<li>Provides readers’ advisory, reference assistance and resource recommendations to children, families, caregivers and educators.</li>
<li>Selects, maintains and promotes materials in the children’s collection in accordance with library policies, community needs and available resources.</li>
<li>Creates displays and reading initiatives that promote children’s materials and library services.</li>
<li>Develops relationships and outreach opportunities with schools, childcare providers and community organizations.</li>
<li>Assists patrons with the library catalog, electronic resources, computers and other library technology.</li>
<li>Assists with general library operations and public service as needed.</li>
<li>Participates in the shared staff cleaning schedule, including an assigned day to clean and sanitize public restrooms, and assists with routine facility cleaning and upkeep.</li>
<li>Participates in staff meetings, training and professional development and performs other related duties as assigned.</li>

<h1>Minimum Qualifications</h1>
<ul>
<li>Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.</li>
<li>Experience working with children and families in a library, school, childcare, recreation, nonprofit or similar setting.</li>
<li>Strong communication, customer-service, organizational and interpersonal skills.</li>
<li>Ability to plan and present engaging children’s programs and work independently and collaboratively.</li>
<li>Basic computer and technology skills, with the ability to learn new systems.</li>
<li>Valid Michigan driver’s license and ability to work the required flexible schedule.</li>
</ul>
<h1>Preferred Qualifications</h1>
<ul>
<li>Public library experience and experience with children’s programming, early literacy, collection development, readers’ advisory or community outreach.</li>
<li>Knowledge of children’s literature and current library-service trends.</li>

<li>Work is performed primarily in a public-library environment and may include community outreach. The employee regularly interacts with children, families and the public and may experience periods of high activity or frequent interruption.</li>
<li>The position requires the ability to move throughout the library, use computers and typical library equipment, remain seated or standing for periods of time, push loaded library carts, and occasionally lift or move materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. GENERAL DESCRIPTION 


 


Under general supervision of the Technical Services Manager, to perform and oversee a variety of professional library tasks related to youth services; to manage collection development, cataloging, and processing of materials serving ages birth through 18; and to support and implement programs and services for children and teens. Functionality is evaluated through review of plans, programs, reports, and conferences. Provides subject‑matter expertise and applies best practices in cataloging and processing materials for children and young adults.

Exercises direct supervision over paraprofessional, technical, clerical, and volunteer 


staff. 


 


IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES 


 


Maintains the children’s and young adult library collections by selecting age-appropriate books and materials and replacing titles as appropriate while operating within established budget guidelines. 


   


Collaborates with Children’s Librarians throughout the Abilene Public Library system to ensure comprehensive and balanced coverage of youth materials. 


     


Provide reference and individual readers’ advisory guidance to children, parents, teachers, and others interested in the resources of the library. 


   


Compile, prepare, and maintain reports, records, and statistics. Submit monthly report of library activities to supervisor for distribution to library administration. 


 


Travel to other branches of the Public Library system and other City of Abilene departments to assist with programming and branch coverage assignments.
